National Suicide Prevention Hotline

The official website for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline says, "We can all help prevent suicide. The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals." The number to call for help is 1-800-273-8255. There are also resources for finding a therapist, stories of hope, and an explanation of how the crisis line works.

National Institute of Mental Health

The National Institute of Mental Health is the leading federal agency for research on mental disorders. They study anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorders, ADD and ADHD, depression, eating disorders, OCD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and PTSD. NIMH provides suicide prevention resources, ongoing research,  list of signs and symptoms to recognize for different mental illnesses, and their website provide insight into the different kinds of therapies offered in the field of psychology in order to treat mental illness.

National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI states on its website that it is the "largest grassroots mental health organization [in America]." It provides links that help educate individuals on mental illness, has online discussion groups, lists local NAMI chapters/support groups, and has published content and reports that discuss mental health. NAMI is also an organization that you can join and become involved in as a civilian.

Mental Health America

Mental Health America is known as "the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all." The organization's website features resources and tools for recovery, support, and mental wellness and also provides screening tests for different mental illnesses. The site provides information on seeking help, types of treatment, finding a Mental Health America in your area, and tips for dealing with insurance.

Psychology Today

Psychology Today is a database where you can search for providers in the mental health field. If you are looking for a therapist, there are filters you can use that ask what kind of insurance you have, what type of treatment you are seeking, and what the treatment is for. The database will show you the best matches in your area based on the filters you use and you can even reach out to therapists' through their profiles. The website will also show you the estimated cost of appointments.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

SAMHSA's website says that it is, "the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities." SAMHSA supports organizations in different states and territories through grants and offers programs to behavioral health professionals in the US such as drug-free workplace programs and behavioral health equity programs. The site also includes a treatment center locator.

Anxiety and Depression Association of America

ADAA works to prevent and treat anxiety disorders and depression. Their website provides information on all anxiety disorders and depression, stories of success, facts and statistics, and treatment options for each type of disorder. and based on demographics. Also featured are resources for finding help, including a list of ADAA therapists, information on medication options, and education resources including blog and books.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance "envisions wellness for people living with mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder)... and provides hope, help, support, and education to improve the lives of people living with mood disorders." The DBSA website includes educational resources, a place to submit questions to a mental health professional, treatment options, a "wellness toolbox," and how to find a local support group. The site also has resources for friends and family and how to get involved with the organization.

International OCD Foundation

The mission of the International OCD Foundation is to "help those affected by obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders to live full and productive lives." IOCD's website features educational information on obsessive-compulsive disorder, links to local affiliates and global partners, and a locator for finding help. IOCD also provides a list of teletherapy providers, an entire affiliate website for schoolteachers titled "Anxiety in the Classroom," and support group information.

National Eating Disorders Association

NEDA is "the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders." NEDA has a NEDA Network, which is "a partnership between NEDA and other mission-aligned organizations dedicated to advancing the field of eating disorders and building a community of support and hope." Their website has a screening tool, a helpline, ways to find treatment, and resources for free and low-cost support and Black Lives Matter. NEDA even includes warning signs and symptoms information, statistics and research, and forums for discussion.

 PTSD Alliance

PTSD Alliance is "an association of advocacy and professional organizations for individuals suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder." PTSD Alliance's website details information on symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It also has resources for emailing, calling, how to get help, and links to a 24-hour hotline and mobile coaching app through ADAA. PTSD Alliance also offers books, booklets and other resources to help and educate and to aid those who deal with PTSD.

Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance

The Schizophrenia and Psychosis Action Alliance's mission is "to save lives by changing the treatment paradigm for all people affected by schizophrenia-related brain diseases which involve psychosis." This organization's website has ways to get involved and provides opportunities for support group registration, education, treatment, and information on clinical trials. SPAA also has a helpline and toolkits for those who have recently been diagnosed.

The Trevor Project

According to its website, "The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25." The website includes research, a helpline, how to get involved with the organization, blogs and events, and education and training resources.

Trans Lifeline

The Trans Lifeline is "a grassroots hotline and microgrants 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering direct emotional and financial support to trans people in crisis – for the trans community, by the trans community." Trans Lifelines offers a hotline for trans individuals and for family and friends. Their website offers a variety of resources for trans individuals, including legal support, health and wellness, ways to deal with online harassment, and self-care and emotional support.

Asian Mental Health Collective 

The Asian Mental Health Collective's mission is "to normalize and de-stigmatize mental health within the Asian community." The official website states that "as members of the Asian Diaspora, there are often strong cultural underpinnings related to [individuals] mental health experiences that go unaddressed." AMHC hopes to make mental health easily available, approachable, and accessible to Asian communities worldwide. The collective has as Advancing Asian Mental Health series that "features individuals and organizations who are striving to make a difference among Asian communities around the world,"offers an "Ask a Provider" feature, a community blog, and a podcast.

Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM)

The Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective is "a collective of advocates, yoga teachers, artists, therapists, lawyers, religious leaders, teachers, psychologists and activists committed to the emotional/mental health and healing of Black communities." Their mission is "to remove the barriers that Black people experience getting access to or staying connected with emotional health care and healing. We do this through education, training, advocacy and the creative arts." They provide medication and insurance resources, a Black virtual wellness directory, mobile crisis units, and a "talk to someone now" feature, among other things.
